The enthusiasm of black voters for the upcoming 2024 general election has registered a decline since 2020, a development that may raise concerns for Joe Biden, according to a recent Washington Post-Ipsos poll.

The poll revealed that the proportion of black voters expressing absolute certainty to vote has dwindled, with only 62% stating they are “absolutely certain to vote” – a drop from the 74% who expressed such certainty in June 2020. Responding to this trend, the Biden campaign announced plans to allocate $25 million to target key voter demographics in battleground states, a move described as “the largest and earliest investment in Black media for a reelection campaign in history.”

Of note, younger black voters exhibited the most significant decline in enthusiasm, as only 41% of those aged 18-39 indicated certainty in voting in the 2024 general election.

Conversely, older black voters showed increased commitment to vote in the upcoming election, with 88% of those over 65 expressing plans to vote – a rise from 87% in June 2020. This demographic shift carries weight, especially in light of former President Donald Trump’s intensified efforts to diminish black voter support for Biden.

Regarding electoral preferences, the survey found that 74% of black registered voters expressed a definite or probable inclination to vote for Biden in a hypothetical race against Trump, who garnered the definite or probable support of only 14% of respondents. Notably, when considering third-party candidates, 20% indicated a definite or probable intention to vote for independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Regarding party affiliation, the poll showed a decrease in certainty to vote among black Democrats, with 76% expressing absolute certainty to vote in the upcoming election, down from 84% in 2020. These findings contribute to a complex electoral landscape as the 2024 general election looms, prompting renewed efforts on the part of political candidates to secure vital support.
