Tragedy struck Santaquin, Utah, on Sunday when a police officer was killed in a suspected hit-and-run accident on Interstate 15. The authorities received a 911 call at approximately 5:56 am reporting an individual standing on the back of a northbound semitrailer. A Santaquin police officer, along with a Utah Highway Patrol trooper, located the semitrailer and stopped it in Santaquin, Utah, about 65 miles south of Salt Lake City.

According to the Spanish Fork Police, the driver of the truck fled the scene, turned the vehicle around the wrong way, and struck two law enforcement vehicles and the Santaquin police officer. The officer, whose identity has not been released, died on the spot. The driver ran away from the scene and reportedly stole multiple cars, including a stolen Ford F150, which was reported stolen in Sanpete County.

Police identified the suspect as Michael Aaron Jayne, a 41-year-old man who was apprehended in the Vernal area; as of the time of writing, he has yet to be charged.

This senseless tragedy has had a severe impact not only on the grieving family of the fallen officer but also on the entire Santaquin City Police Department, a tight-knit community with a population of just 17,000.

“Our entire department is hurt. And the family of the officer is hurt. Because of a senseless act by one individual, we have family members who will miss their father at their nearing wedding,” said Santaquin City Police Department Lieutenant Mike Wall during a news conference on Sunday.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox described the officer’s death as “devastating” in a post on his social media account. During a press conference, Santaquin Mayor Dan Olsen expressed his deep sorrow and called it a significant loss for the town.

The incident is still under investigation by the authorities to determine the exact events that led to this tragedy.
