Expressing his intentions via a post on X, Sen. Schumer affirmed his commitment to pushing forward with the proposed ban. Supporters argue that stricter gun control laws are crucial for addressing gun violence and ensuring public safety. However, critics question the efficacy of such measures and their potential infringement on Second Amendment rights.

Schumer’s announcement cam just days after he received a letter from seven ‘leading’ national education organizations. You can read the letter in it’s entirety below:

The claims by Democrats that the 1994-2004 ‘assault weapons’ ban led to a decrease in gun violence has already been thoroughly debunked. According to a report by the Department of Justice’s National Institute of Justice (NIJ), the ban’s impact on crime was minimal.

Even the Washington Post questioned the ban’s effectiveness. Watch:

Sen. Schumer’s recent comments suggest that Democrats are standing in solidarity with the American people by advocating for stricter gun control measures. However, recent polling data paints a different picture. In a November 2023 NBC News poll, it was revealed that American gun ownership had reached its highest recorded level, with over half of Americans reporting owning a firearm or having one in their household.

Moreover, a Harvard/Harris Poll highlighted that six in ten voters believe that owning a firearm is a means of self-defense against criminals. This indicates a strong belief among citizens that the right to bear arms is an essential aspect of personal safety and protection.

Focusing specifically on firearms commonly labeled as ‘assault weapons,’ it’s estimated that there were nearly 25 million such firearms in circulation as of June 2022. The National Shooting Sports Foundation reported that the number of AR/AK-style firearms in circulation surpassed even that of the popular Ford F-Series trucks on the road at that time. Given the continued popularity of these firearms, it is safe to assume that the number has grown substantially since then.

The introduction of a proposed assault weapons ban will undoubtedly spark heated debates and divide public opinion on the issue of gun control. Both proponents and opponents of such measures will closely monitor the legislative proceedings as they unfold in the Senate.

As the debate over gun control intensifies, politicians, experts, and constituents alike will closely follow the Senate floor discussions in the coming week regarding Senator Schumer’s proposed ‘assault weapons’ ban.
