On Saturday, two Polk sheriff’s deputies were seriously wounded after a gunfight broke out at a public park in Lakeland. The Polk County Sheriff, Grady Judd, affirmed that the deputies were shot by an uncooperative man who refused to get out of his car after it was spotted in the park after hours. Judd praised the deputies for their heroism as they attempted to extract the man from his vehicle. He went on to state that the man was “killed graveyard dead” after preliminary information from investigators revealed that he fired the first shot at the deputies.

Judd specifically thanked the deputies for their bravery and service, stating that such incidents abuse the trust individuals have in the police force and their faith in humanity’s goodness. Lt. Chad Anderson was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, which included a gunshot wound to his arm that passed through his chest. Fortunately, he is now in stable condition. The other victim, Deputy Craig Smith, was shot four times in the right arm and is currently in stable condition in intensive care.

Further details reveal that the deputies had responded to a colleague’s call for backup when a suspect in the car refused to be questioned by the colleague. According to Judd, there had been a series of thefts from cars in the area, which prompted authorities to have extra patrols. On the night of the shooting, four deputies and two trainees tried to get the suspect to exit his car. When two deputies, Anderson and Smith, approached the car’s door, the man pulled out his gun and started firing, injuring both.

The man was killed during the ensuing gunfight, and the sheriff’s office has not released his identity. The shooting is currently being investigated by the state attorney, Brian Haas, whose judicial circuit includes Polk County.
