Tensions between Iran and Israel escalated late Saturday as Iran reportedly launched drones from its own territory toward Israel in a retaliatory move following an airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Syria earlier in the week. The airstrike in Damascus resulted in the deaths of several Iranian generals, prompting Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to vow retaliation against Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier indicated that Israel had been anticipating a potential direct attack from Iran, stating that the country’s air defenses were fully prepared for any scenario, emphasizing Israel’s stance on protecting itself from threats with determination.

Joe Biden, who had cut short a weekend trip to monitor the situation, returned to the White House as the crisis unfolded. The U.S. State Department had also taken precautions by restricting travel for government employees and their families outside major cities in Israel, citing concerns about potential Iranian strikes.

The attack on the Iranian consulate occurred on April 1, resulting in the deaths of 12 individuals, including seven members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Notably, one of the individuals killed was identified as Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps who had been previously sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department for his role in Iran’s support of the militant group Hezbollah.
