As details emerged, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto shed light on the unfolding events, explaining, “It wasn’t until he took the positions that he did that they fired upon him.”

The chain of events leading to the fatal confrontation began with a call to Kenner police regarding a double shooting around 9:45 on Sunday morning. According to Kenner police Capt. Michael Cunningham, it was revealed that the victims, believed to be on their way to or from church, were shot in front of a residence.

Cunningham remarked, “We believe they were going to or coming from church and stopped in front of the house when they were shot.”

Providing a critical lead, the victims identified the source of the gunfire as the residence of a wanted individual, 31-year-old Matthew Lathers, who was sought for attempted murder and armed robbery earlier in the week. Police deduced that Lathers mistook the victims for law enforcement, thereby prompting the tragic incident.

“He knew that they were looking for him and what I think happened is some innocent people pulled up at the house, he thought it was police and fired at them,” elaborated Lopinto.

Amid escalating tensions, a SWAT team made a determined entry into the residence following the acquisition of a search warrant, encountering gunfire from within. In the ensuing exchange, three police officers sustained injuries, prompting a swift call for reinforcement from Jefferson Parish deputies.

As the situation intensified, Lathers escalated his aggression by firing at an armored vehicle, driving law enforcement to action. Despite efforts to initiate dialogue with Lathers, the negotiator’s attempts proved fruitless, eventually leading to the fatal turn of events.

“We attempted to negotiate with him numerous times, but there was never any answer or attempt to negotiate with us. It wasn’t until he took the position that he did that they fired upon him,” recounted Lopinto.

The prolonged standoff was brought to a decisive conclusion when a JPSO sniper successfully neutralized Lathers.

“The same suspect came out with his rifle in the same location where one of our rifles was able to return fire on him and take him out at that time. He has been declared deceased at the scene,” revealed Lopinto.

Thankfully, all five victims, including the three officers injured in the exchange, are reported to be in stable condition as authorities grapple with the aftermath of the tragic incident.
